Supporting Macmillan: the Return of the Great Coodes’ Christmas Cake Off

Returning after a spectacular debut in 2018 is The Great Coodes Christmas Cake Off, thanks to many fantastic bakers in Cornwall who are happily making Macmillan a homemade Christmas Cake in addition to their own family bakes. The fruitcakes of their labour will be on sale from the groaning Christmas Cake stall. ‘Coodes is sponsoring the Christmas cake sale at the Macmillan Christmas Fair once again. We are thrilled to do so, not just because we really enjoy it but also because it’s such a good fundraiser for a fantastic charity’ says Ed Coode, Associate in Coodes Solicitors Wills, Trusts and Probate team.

At the 2018 Macmillan Fair, the Great Coodes’ Christmas Cake Off raised a staggering £1,500 and we hope we can beat that this year. Coodes’ offices will provide the drop-off points for all the donated Christmas cakes. ‘Because we have nine branches, from Penzance and St Ives in the West to Launceston and Holsworthy in the east, we’re ideally placed to be the collecting service for everyone who donates. Once again this year, we are inviting people to drop off their homemade Christmas cakes to one of our offices. ‘

The focal point of the stall will be a beautiful cake generously baked for Cornwall Macmillan by Jenny at Wadebridge Cakes.  In return for a donation, visitors will be able to guess the weight of her cake, with the winner taking home this glorious creation. We are also launching a cake decorating competition with a prize for the design our judges think the most festively attractive.

‘As the summer holidays draw to a close, Christmas may seem a long way away, but a proper Christmas cake needs time to mature and the experts recommend making a cake around three months ahead of the big day. There’s nothing guaranteed to get you into the Christmas spirit more than the smell of the cake steeping in the brandy. Maybe this year you could make one for the family and make a second one to donate one to Macmillan. That’s what I’ll be doing.’ Ed Coode, Associate in Coodes Solicitors Wills, Trusts and Probate team
