Every year in Cornwall, more than 3,500 people hear those dreaded words, “You’ve got cancer.” The number of people living with cancer is increasing nationwide, with 1 in 2 of us expecting to receive a cancer diagnosis in our lifetime. While the number of people surviving cancer is increasing, so is the number of people living with the long-term effects of cancer. People who need support that Macmillan Cancer Support provides.

Macmillan receives no Government funding and relies almost entirely on public donations to support the increasing number of people living with cancer in Cornwall. That’s why the Cornwall Macmillan Christmas Fair is such a great event and worthy of your support. It has already raised more than £630,000 since it began and is a fantastic yearly event. Providing a great day out at the Eden Project and an opportunity to get ahead with your Christmas shopping, it also raises much needed funds so that we can help more people in Cornwall and beyond.

Macmillan provides support to people living with cancer in multiple ways. Macmillan professionals, including nurses, work with cancer patients across the spectrum from diagnosis to treatment and recovery to end of life care. Our Support Line responded to over 150,000 calls and web enquiries in 2017, marking a 7% increase on the year before, with the charity providing a range of medical, practical and emotional support and advice.

In Cornwall, with the aid of a public appeal, we have invested more than £3m in a new information and support centre, The Cove, at The Royal Cornwall Hospital in Truro. It saw more than 12,500 people in its first year and is becoming an ever more popular resource as it approaches its second birthday, providing vital support in so many ways to so many people.

Our mobile information bus visits the county each year, reaching out to people in towns and villages. In September its schedule included Falmouth, Truro, Looe and Liskeard. We also have Macmillan nurses and other professionals in the county. Macmillan is here to support people in whatever way we can, helping them to find their best way through, whatever their prognosis. With your help and support we can meet that ambition.

As Head of Service in the south west for Macmillan Cancer Support, I want to thank the Committee that delivers this fantastic Cornwall Christmas Fair.
